Mobile Scooters Are Not Always Expensive

Mobile scooters may not be as expensive as you think.  If your insurance plan covers even part of the cost of a mobile scooter, the savings can drastically reduce the price you pay.

First, you must meet Medicare’s rigid standards:

  • You have a condition that makes it necessary to use a wheelchair to get from room to room in your home
  • You are unable to operate a manual wheelchair
  • You can safely get in and out of a scooter

If a doctor provides a written statement that all three of those rules apply to you, you should quality for Medicare coverage of your mobile scooter.  They will pay 80% of the purchase price after your deductible of $124 (per 2006) has been subtracted.  Be cautious of a company that offers to waive your deductible, as there are several scammers out there.  Do your homework first and find a reputable company to help you obtain your mobile scooter at little to know cost.

If you have additional health insurance coverage through Medicaid or another company, they may pick up the additional 20% for the mobile scooter, but you will still owe the $124 deductible.  If you are among the lucky few who get both companies to pay for a mobile scooter, you will only pay a little over $100, so that’s not too expensive at all.

There are four types of mobile scooters:  travel scooters, three-wheel scooters, four-wheel scooters, and heavy-duty scooters.  The mobile scooter you choose determines how expensive it is.

Travel mobile scooters are the lightest and most compact.  They are meant for light use when out shopping or traveling.  Travel mobile scooters typically cost between $559 and $1499 on sale, or $1079 and $2550 regularly.  Sale prices will vary from store to store.

Three-wheel mobile scooters are a little more durable and are meant for daily indoor use.  Expect to pay at least $1,045 to $2,339 on sale.  Regular prices range from a high of $2850 to a low of $1,995.

Indoor and outdoor four-wheel mobile scooters are the extremely durable and can travel over rougher terrain found in back yards.  Sale prices for the four-wheel mobile scooters range from $1,299 to $2,499 compared to suggested prices of $2,295 to $2,935.

Finally, heavy-duty mobile scooter models are meant for obese people weighing up to 600 pounds.  These models will cost the most.  $2,049 is the basic model’s list price.  Few sales are offered on the heavy-duty mobile models.  The priciest, most solid heavy-duty model costs $4,500 on sale or $7,000 regularly.
